Bars & Nightclubs

Trumps

If you need a massive dose of house and pop to let yourself go, Trumps can provide it on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of national holidays, especially downstairs, where there are two dance floors to party the night away. The nightclub has just marked its 35th anniversary and remains the city’s most popular. It always has a packed program – plus a summer event, the Hot Season Festival, that was the ctiy’s first international gay and lesbian festival, with parties for all tastes.

Finalmente

This year Finalmente marks its 40th year in business, with the big party taking place in May. There is also a big novelty in the form of a new show by Deborah Kristall at weekends, dubbed “A Ilha das Bananas” (Bananas Island). Samantha Rox, Jennie Larrue, Nyma Charles, Kelly Kiss and the dancer Michael Fire also pop up. Finalmente opens even on Mondays, to ensure there is fun every day of the week, with “Lugar às Novas” (Make Way for Newcomers), which is aimed at showcasing new drag talents.

Construction

Some say that this men-only cruising bar opened in 2013 has the city’s best after-hours party: on Friday nights, Saturday nights and the eve of national holidays it keeps going until 8am. It has a dancefloor where house rules, a dark room and private cubicles. When most of the city is already asleep, here the night is young – although this is certainly not a place for minors.

TR3S

This bar in Príncipe Real in May hosts the annual Lisbon Bear Pride. As one of the city’s most popular bears bars, it even has its own merchandise. Happy hour lasts from 4pm to 10pm and on Sundays (between those same hours) patrons are invited to sample the homemade cakes.

Bar 106

This bar in Rua de São Marçal is proud of being one of the city’s oldest gay bars: it marked its 25th anniversary last year. A closed- door affair, it tends to be most popular on Sundays, when at its message parties – a rarity nowadays thanks to mobile text messages and Grindr – you can sending messages to a stranger you like the look of. There are also nuts and bolts parties and, on Wednesdays, cheap drinks. Happy hour runs until 11.30pm.

Bar Cru

The best place to shed your inhibitions. On Sundays from 5pm and until 3am the dress code at this cruising bar is very simple: no clothes. Even the staff work in the buff, so as not to spoil the picture. On the fourth Saturday of every month they also host a naked disco so you can let it all hang out as you dance. The place has also won fame for its fetish events – from fist parties to golden rain parties, and including a ‘Roman orgy’. If you are under 26 you get in free.

Purex

This gay-friendly bar in Bairro Alto is a popular stop on weekend nights. As a result it is almost always packed, making it hard to get a table or space on the dancefloor – or even to get to the bar – on a Friday night. Even so, the parties here are among the most fun in the area, with a varied crowd and DJ sets that are publicised a few days in advance on the bar’s Facebook page.

Parties & Events

Conga Club

These parties started in June of 2011 and now almost always take place on the first Saturday of the month (though with some exceptions) at different venues (the last few have been at Lust, on Terreiro do Paço). The theme varies. This year so far we have had Reinas del Baile, with lots of Latin reggaeton; Hard Candy, a concept that featured Hello Kitty brand and candy floss; and a deluxe gala to mark the 50th party.

Saunas

Trombeta Bath

On Sundays some people go to mass, others head for the sauna and some manage to make it to both. At least there is no need to worry about the time so far as this Bairro Alto sauna is concerned, since it is open 24 hours a day. They also offer therapeutic, sports and relaxation massages, costing from 30 to 50 euros, between noon and midnight.

SaunApolo 56

SaunApolo 56 is proud to have been Portugal’s first mixed dedicated sauna. Located in Rua Luciano Cordeiro, near Praça Marquês de Pombal, it welcomes people of any gender and sexual orientation, and the website specifically targets open-minded couples seeking new experiences. It has communal showers, private cubicles with erotic films, cubicles with glory holes, a cinema and bar.
