In April, the management of Rio de Janeiro’s oldest gay nightclub Le Boy suddenly announced that the club would be closing for renovations immediately.  Rumors on social media implied the message of “under construction” really meant “adios.”  Brazil’s largest newspaper O Globo published an article (in Portuguese) about controversy.

Management claims Le Boy will re-open on the eve of the 2016 Olympics in August, just in time for the masses of foreign tourists. VamosGay will update this listing if/when the nightclub re-opens.

Le Boy might be one of the most famous (infamous?) gay nightclubs in the world.  Over the years, the Copacabana nightspot has entertained tourists from across the globe with bronze muscular go go boys and jam packed dance floors.

For first time visitors, Le Boy is a quick-and-easy way to have a good time.  The location is within 15 minutes by foot from many hotels in both Copacabana and Ipanema, and there are many places nearby to grab a snack before you hit the club.  The sidewalk outside of Le Boy can be a bit of a scene with many colorful characters.   The music at Le Boy sticks to the international dance/pop format, but for more Brazilian beats like MPB and funk, make your way to Pista 2, Le Boy’s smaller dance area.  Those who can’t dance can still have a good time watching drag shows and sexy contests like “best bum bum.”

The downside of Le Boy is that, as a tourist magnet, it attracts pickpockets and hustlers.  For a younger hipper crowd on a Saturday night, make the trip out to The Week.
